Registering or Re-registering Windows 98
For some unknown reason Windows 98, at times, loses the user registration, thereby preventing the user from accessing Windows Update. The following registry edit solves this problem in most cases.
Open Regedit by clicking Start, Run and typing in “Regedit” without the quotes.
Search for the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
In the left window, click on CurrentVersion to highlight it.
In the right window, scroll down and search for: Regdone
Right click on Regdone and change the DWord value to “1” (without the quotes).
This enables Win98 to think that it is registered without actually going through the entire registration process all over again, and permits the download of files marked “for registered users only” on the Windows Update download page.
