Many first timers feel the need to build their network without the use of a hub and use a crossover cable instead. I do not recommend building your network this way. Often times the use of a crossover cable will result in data errors, loss of connectivity, or the network may not work at all. I still highly recommend the use of a hub. 5 port models sell for around $35.00 and up, and often times you can purchase a complete starter kit with 2 cards, cable, and a 5 port hub for well under $100.00. If you watch for sales, you can often pick one up for around $70.00.
