Slot-to-Socket (ssa) Adapters
Over the last several months several manufacturers have released Slot-to-Socket (SSA) Adapters to enable those who have purchased Slot 1 motherboards to use to use the Intel® Pentium ® III Flip Chip Pin Grid Array type processor.
During our own test trials we have noted that many of the SSA’s that we have tested do not function correctly or do not allow the processor to function correctly when combined with motherboards for which the SSA was not specifically designed. As an example, we have found this to be especially critical with motherboards manufactured by Intel ®, Supermicro, Abit and Asus. Below you will find listings of motherboards and SSA’s that have been tested for compliance with the specifications outlined by Intel for use with the Intel Pentium III processor in the Flip Chip Pin Grid Array (FC-PGA) package. You will also note the SSA combinations that are not in compliance with the Intel specification.

Using Boxed Intel® Pentium® III Processors in the FC-PGA Package with Slot-to-Socket Adapters (SSA) Updated June 2000
Intel recommends motherboards that utilize the 370-pin socket for the boxed Intel® Pentium® III processor in the Flip Chip Pin Grid Array (FC-PGA) package. The motherboard must be validated specifically for the Pentium III processors. However, if you choose to utilize a “slot-to-socket adapter (SSA)”, then select those designed explicitly by your motherboard manufacturer and validated specifically by the motherboard manufacturer for your motherboard and Pentium III processor in the FC-PGA package.
SSA AND MOTHERBOARD COMBINATIONS WHICH CAUSE YOUR PROCESSOR TO OPERATE OUT OF SPECIFICATIONS WILL VOID THE INTEL PROCESSOR LIMITED WARRANTY AND MAY DAMAGE THE PROCESSOR AND/OR MOTHERBOARD.
The use of SSAs on Intel® Desktop Boards equipped with the 242-contact slot connector is not recommended. Please check the Factory Notes section of the Technical Center for updated information.
The following 2 lists of SSA and motherboard combinations depict levels of compliance and noncompliance with minimum functional and voltage requirements for the Pentium III processor in the FC-PGA package. (Specifically Signal Integrity of the AGTL+ lines and Voltage Levels of Vtt, Vcc, and VccCMOS.) These are not comprehensive lists and are not a substitute for complete validation testing. CONTACT YOUR MOTHERBOARD MANUFACTURER TO ENSURE THEY HAVE TESTED AND VALIDATED COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN MOTHERBOARD, SSA, AND THE PENTIUM III PROCESSOR IN THE FC-PGA PACKAGE BEFORE USING ANY SSA/MOTHERBOARD CONFIGURATION.
