Studios and small apartments are very popular, especially in large cities. It may be because they are cheaper to live in, but it’s also because, let’s face it, you don’t need three bedrooms, a living room, and a separate dining room if you live by yourself.
But living in a small apartment is all nice and cozy until you find out you have too much stuff and too little room for it all. If you don’t want to end up living in a corner because your stuff takes up too much space, it’s time to do something quickly.
Making a small apartment functional can be challenging, but it’s definitely not impossible. All you need is a bit of creativity and the correct mindset.
The whole philosophy on living in a small space is learning to do better with less. Start by thinking about what space is going to be utilized for and make sure you set things up appropriately.
This should be the way all houses are organized, but it’s much more important to do things with purpose when you have limited space to work with, to ensure you take advantage of it to the best of your ability.
Because we know it can be difficult to come up with ideas on how to spruce up a small apartment, we are here to help. Below is some advice on how to keep things organized when living in a tiny space.

Declutter every month
Whether we like to admit this or not, the problem may not be that the space you live in is too small, but that you have too much stuff. It’s nothing to be ashamed of; we all like to hoard. But there comes a time when you simply need to get rid of everything you don’t use to make room for the things you do actually need.
We know, we know. What if you’ll need that thing one day? Well, chances are, if you have not used a certain item for the past year, you won’t be using it in the future either.
The key to living happily in a small space is decluttering as often as you can. Every month or so, take the time to quickly go through every area in your apartment and get rid of the stuff you don’t use. If there are things, you are not sure whether to keep or give away, take them out and place them in sight. If you still don’t end up using them by the next decluttering session, it’s time to say goodbye.
Use as much vertical space as you can
Small apartments don’t have a ton of floor space to use, but you have plenty of vertical space you can take advantage of. Install shelves that can hold up boxes, so you can hide any items you are not currently using. This includes winter clothes, spare linens, and all the knick-knacks that are lying around in your apartment.
You can do this in every room to free up floor space and add more storage room. If you have a small bathroom, invest in a cabinet or shelves that can go above the toilet to use as much vertical space as possible. You can use these shelves to store towels and toiletries, and you can add some hooks on the side to hang your hair-dryer and other electronics.
If you have a small bedroom, you can add storage space above your bed as well. You can add some cabinets or shelves and store things out in boxes to keep them out of the way.
Empty the floor
The key to making as much room as you can in a small space is to empty out the floor as much as you can. That does not mean you can’t put furniture on the floor, but don’t use it as storage space. Take the closet, for example. Instead of putting all your shoes at the bottom of the closet, buy some cheap shoe racks or bins and stack them, creating more space to fill.
If you have lots of cables hanging around, these can take up space and make the room feel more crowded. If you don’t want to buy cable organizers, you can easily DIY them. All you need is some Sugru, a silicone rubber clay that is used as an adhesive.
You can use Sugru to model out some cable holders that can fit on the sides of your desk, keeping cables up and freeing the floor. Simply mold the paste into balls about the size of a walnut and use a toothpick to press it down, creating an opening that will hold the cable. Let it dry for 12-24 hours, and you got your cable holders ready.
Get creative with space
When you live in a small space, you need to work with what you got. Don’t stick to the labels of a room if you think you can turn it into so much more. Use as much of the space as you can, but in a smart way. Buy stackable boxes and make sure they fit well in your space so that you have easy access to stuff even when they are out of the way.
Consider investing in furniture that has a lot of storing space, such as a bed or couch with room for storage underneath. This will help keep things out of the way and allow you to enjoy the functionality of these items as well.
Do you have a small bedroom with little storage space? Consider hanging your jewelry, bags, hats, or other accessories on the walls. It can create a nice display and will help you free up space.
People often overlook the space left on the sides of the furniture or on the back of the doors, but this is a room that can be utilized as well. You can add hooks and small shelves that you can also use to reduce some of the clutter and have everything in one place.
